Julia has been writing professionally for more than 30 years. She specializes in food and drink and nutrition but she also writes about décor, architecture, furniture design, fashion and skincare, and has been a ghostwriter of editorials for a leading Canadian chef. Author of three cookbooks, her most recent is 125 Best Entertaining Recipes (Robert Rose),
Julia is currently food editor of the magazines My Advantage (published for Sears) and Expressions (published for Honda), and was previously food editor of Homemaker’s, Elm Street and Canadian Family magazines.
She contributes a regular food and wine column to the Liquor Control Board of Ontario’s Food & Drink magazine and a nutrition column to Diabetes Dialogue, the magazine of the Canadian Diabetes Association. She also writes regularly for the Toronto Star and Prime Time. Her work has also appeared in Toronto Life, Saturday Night, Glow, and Together magazines.
Julia has also written for a diverse range of corporate clients, including Metro supermarkets, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Piat d’Or, M&M Meat Shops, and Betty Crocker.
Julia’s first book, Quick and Easy Baking (Grosvenor House Press) appeared in 1986. Since then she has edited and/or contributed to many other cookbooks. In 1996 she co-authored, with Anita Stewart, The Ontario Harvest Cookbook (Macmillan Canada). Her most recent book, Julia Aitken’s Easy Entertaining (Robert Rose), published in 1999, was re-issued in 2007 under the title 125 Best Entertaining Recipes.
